Civil Engineering Capabilities

From the earliest stages of project planning, Westlake’s civil engineers draw on years of design and permitting experience with wind power sites.

Civil Engineering for Site Work, Crane and Turbine Pads, Roads, and Access Points

  • Preliminary site assessments for access planning focused on topography and environmental factors that restrict alignment options.

  • Establishing the design criteria for crane, turbine, tower, and blade transport vehicles to reflect the turning radius and maximum slope allowed.

  • Analysis of County and/or State highways to ensure adequate sight distance and vehicle turning radii for access to the site. Coordination with agency staff for route planning with load assessments.

  • Construction documents for permitting and to support bidding. Typically, these include looped connections and/or turn-arounds on-site, as well as state and County access.

Utility Corridor

  • Analysis of the power collection system alignment for constructability, with an eye to avoiding severe slopes and rock outcroppings.

  • Identification of easements that may be needed as well as possible conflicts with existing utilities or easements.

Grading and Storm Water

  • Grading plans to manage drainage for roads, substations, O&M facilities, and staging areas. Design of culverts where necessary to mitigate impacts to soil conservation terraces.

  • Run-off management plans that meet protection criteria for wetlands, riparian areas, or conservation zones and for NPDES and soil conservation permitting.

Coordination of Other Consultants

  • As a full service site development engineering firm, we offer a local presence to coordinate scoping and the efforts of other consultants, such as geotechnical and environmental consultants, water well and sanitary disposal designers, and surveyors.
