Deformation Assessment and Monitoring

Our precise, truly 3D measurements offer unparalleled capabilities for assessing deformation and monitoring movement.

  • For monitoring we are able to take repeat measurements to targets in order to detect movement in any direction.
  • For assessment of deformation, we can provide precise measurements in difficult environments, analyze complex shapes, and identify deviations from expected in every direction. Our experience includes flatness checks, checks of alignment including plumb and torsion, and centerline checks of trunnions, rotors, and axles.

Portland International Airport Garage - Steel Collapse

During construction of a new multi-story garage at the Portland International Airport, the structural steel on the fourth floor collapsed, causing the deaths of three ironworkers.

Westlake provided precise 3D measurements to define the extent of deformation in the most severely impacted areas and to assess the viability of other structures in the vicinity of the collapse zone. Graphical representation was provided to show deviation from expected for review by structural experts.

Craneway Rail Deformation

crane-pic.JPG

To assess the deformation of a rail on a craneway, we used a combination of precise 3D industrial measurements and 3D Scan. The craneway sits 80 feet above the dock and extends 130 feet to convey potash to container vessels.

We took precise 3D discrete point measurements to identify the location and extent of deformation. The 3D Scan data was used to develop a model of the distorted rail and the surrounding stuctures to support project planning.
