Prefabrication Measurements for the Glomar Explorer
Westlake provided measurements for re-fitting of the Glomar Explorer, a 700 foot long ship. Originally designed by Howard Hughes to retrieve a Soviet submarine from the ocean floor at a depth of 3 miles, the vessel was being remodeled to serve as a mobile oil exploration platform.
Measurements for new holding tanks and bulkheads were made while the ship was in the water and listing significantly. Based on these measurements, new tanks were prefabricated, then floated under the ship, up through the retractable floor, and welded into place.
