Bridge Building & Repair
I-5 Bridge Crossing the Columbia River
Westlake provided precise 3D measurements and monitoring for replacement of a cracked trunnion on the I-5 Bridge.
Working from the river bank, we as-built bridge structures for prefabrication of false work and then verified false work alignment and plumb. During replacement of sheaves, we monitored structures and false work for load deformation.
Christie Constructors was able to complete this project in 6 days rather than the 21 days scheduled, and as a result, received a $1.5 million incentive bonus.

Deformation Assessment and Monitoring
Our precise, truly 3D measurements offer unparalleled capabilities for assessing deformation and monitoring movement.
- For monitoring we are able to take repeat measurements to targets in order to detect movement in any direction.
- For assessment of deformation, we can provide precise measurements in difficult environments, analyze complex shapes, and identify deviations from expected in every direction. Our experience includes flatness checks, checks of alignment including plumb and torsion, and centerline checks of trunnions, rotors, and axles.

Petrochemical Refineries
ARCO Coker Drum Replacement
Westlake provided precise measurement services for replacement of four coker drums. The vessels were 28 feet in diameter, 100 feet tall, and located on a concrete structure 70 feet above the ground.
For each vessel, we located the 12 existing anchor bolts and marked locations on the concrete foundation for the replacement bolts. During drilling, bolt locations were adjusted to avoid existing rebar. We returned to the site to locate the centerline of each drilled hole using a specially designed target.
We provided these final locations to the manufacturer for pre-drilling of the new flanges. Each of the four prefabricated coker drums was lifted into place without need for field fitting.

Rudder Verification and Assembly Support
A new 30 foot rudder was manufactured by Cascade General for the bulk carrier Baneasa. Westlake provided real-time dimensional control and support for precise installation of the upper and lower castings. The work was completed under schedule, and a first time fit was achieved.
Client: Cascade General Inc.
Specific Services:
-
Westlake as-built the rudder frame to establish a control plane.
-
We made real-time measurements for positioning and field welding of the 6 ton lower casting in 3D. These measurements were made with the rudder in a horizontal position.
-
Prior to installation of the upper casting, we checked the dimensions and normality of the milled plane as well as alignment of the bore and taper.
-
With the rudder in a vertical position, we made real-time 3D measurements for precise positioning and welding of the 14 ton upper casting.
-
Finally, we checked the bore-alignment and horizontal and vertical alignment of the castings to ensure that the gap was within the established maximum 3 mm tolerance. We provided on-site AutoCad support to confirm the final positioning prior to finish welding.
